The Moss Ten
1) Offset your carbon already, sheesh! :) Al Gore will thank you here:
www.climatecrisis.net/takeaction/carboncalculator/
2) Throwing it all away…but carefully. It’s great to throw out your x’s early 80’s vinyl collection as part of your healing process; but better yet, just post it on Freecycle www.freecycle.org and some Joan Jett fanatic will come to your house and take it away for free! (one man’s trash…) The idea here is that very little actually belongs in the trash. Then, to end those pesky arguments about what can and can’t be recycled (probably caused your breakup), go to www.nyc.gov/html/nycwasteless, the NYC government website that details how and when to recycle everything in New York.
3) Worm condo! Two words that bring joy to my heart. Yes, you too can actually do your own composting right in your NYC apartment. Toss in banana peels, egg shells etc, and out comes black gold: super nutrient rich potting soil for your award winning orchids or heaven smelling herb garden. Plus you get to tell people you have a worm farm in your house. Get all the details here: http://www.lesecologycenter.org/products.html
4) Retail therapy!!! What could be better than shopping your way to a greener planet? To get you started, here’s a short list of establishments which we have investigated and believe have a legitimate commitment to healing the environment, and see that as an integral part of the way they do business. When you spend your $ with them, you grow something green in the world.
Beauty: Priti Organic Spa www.pritiorganicspa.com Groceries: Greenmarket Farmer’s Markets www.cenyc.org/greenmarket Integral Yoga Natural Foods www.integralyoganaturalfoods.com Park Slope Food Coop www.foodcoop.com Whole Foods www.wholefoodsmarket.com Yoga: Jivamukti Yoga School www.jivamuktiyoga.com Boddhisatva Yoga www.bodhisattvayoga.com Cool Stuff: Organic Avenue www.organicavenue.com Live Live www.live-live.com Construction: Build It Green NYC www.bignyc.org For larger work, contact moss for an eco-aware contractor/developer recommendation www.mossrealestategroup.com/Brokerwebsite3/mossrealty/contact.aspx Interior design: re:place www.replacenyc.com Restaurants: café habana outpost www.ecoeatery.com Il Buco www.ilbuco.com Savoy www.savoynyc.com Angelica Kitchen www.angelicakitchen.com Pure Food and Wine www.purefoodandwine.com Mana Organic Café www.manaorganic.com Real Estate Services : Moss (duh) www.realestatereconsidered.com
5) No more bottled water! Why waste all those natural resources manufacturing and shipping water bottles all over the place? Buy a quality water filter for your home and some reusable non-leaching bottles (we like www.mysigg.com ) and make a real difference. The water will be really fresh and tasty too! We like www.purewaterexpress.com for the filter. The owner is an MIT professor so you can ask him to explain the universe to you.
6) Switch to green power! Green power in the form of wind and/or light hydro is available to virtually all New Yorkers. Just call your power company and tell them you want to go green. It costs as little as 6% more but what a small price to pay to know your entire home is running on a breeze! We use con-ed solutions at Moss. www.conedsolutions.com/residential/greenpowermain.htm
7) Switch to eco-friendly cleaning products for all household chores. We like Seventh generation and Ecover brands, or better yet, try making your own: great, simple recipes are found in Annie Berthold-Bond's book, "Better Basics for the Home." If that’s too much for you to deal with give Wendy a call at Healthy Homes green cleaning service and she’ll come do it for you: 917 838 7479 (expensive but worth it).
8) Eliminate the flood of junk-mail by getting a service like www.41pounds.org or www.greendimes.com to handle the all the gory details. You'll be on your way to a near empty mailbox in no time, and the trees will thank you.
9) Renovating a condo? Painting the baby’s room? Try Build it Green NYC www.bignyc.org for all of your DIY needs and some great advice. Developing a 1000 unit green condo-hotel? Call Moss to link up with a contractor who knows what FSC, VOC, and LEED means. (Forest Stewardship Council, Volatile Organic Compound, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). www.mossrealestategroup.com/Brokerwebsite3/mossrealty/contact.aspx
10) Green makeover- want the glory of green with less bending and lifting? Want a personal green trainer? Want to green a small country? No job too big or small, Moss has formed alliances with some of the world’s most accomplished and visionary greenies. We have experts ready to consult, implement, construct, or just plain shoot the biomass with you about your next eco-adventure.
